Heritage Sites

Whangapoua Forest has over 300 known archaeological sites, and more are being discovered all the time. These are primarily pre-European sites. Staff and contractors are trained in what to look for, and archaeologists and local iwi carry out regular surveys for new sites. When sites are found, no further work happens until a management plan is agreed upon with local iwi, archaologists and the Historic Places Trust. Often this requires careful removal of any trees that may be present so as not to disturb the site. Sites are not replanted.
