McCarthy Transport, Lower North Island

Transport and logistics company, McCarthy Transport has been working with Ernslaw One for three generations.

The family run business was started by the father of current managing director, Mark McCarthy, 71 years ago and is now run by Mark’s sons.  Thirty years ago, when Mark’s father was still involved with the business, he and the boys had four trucks between them.  They now run 134 trucks and employ over 200 people across many functions including drivers, mechanics, engineers and administration.

With depots in Kairioi, Wanganui, Masterton and Napier McCarthy’s is well positioned to provide cartage services for Ernslaw One in the Southern North Island from forests to domestic mills, railheads and ports.  McCarthy also operates a transfer yard for Ernslaw One’s Titoki Forest to enable harvesting operations to continue unimpeded when log supplies build up and distribution channels slow.

Both companies have grown together over the past 30 years and Mark says Ernslaw One has been a great business partner to have.

“They have been really good to us.  They have been fair and understanding of pricing but most of all they’ve supported the growth of our company and our people.  We share similar values,” says Mark.

“Ernslaw has allowed us to develop specialist units for on and off highway work enabling us to work steep terrain with multi drive trucks and we’re still using those same trucks today. This has meant lower roading costs for them and has allowed us to have a very low risk transport operation in marginal country.”

Ernslaw One has also collaborated with McCarthy Transport on its cadet programme for bringing drivers on from school, as well as older drivers.

“They have given us an area to run cadet trucks to train and develop our team.  It’s been a really successful system over the last 25 years and more than 90 drivers have graduated from that programme,” says Mark.
