Miles of grit: ultra-athletes take on Naseby’s ultimate challenge
Held annually in Ernslaw One’s Naseby Forest, the Great Naseby Water Race(GNWR) is an ultra-marathon challenge not for the faint-hearted. The eventfollows a 10-kilometre figure-eight loop of gravel roads and forest trails that run alongside the historic Water Race -an artificial channel originally builtduring the gold rush to support mining, and now a vital water source for Naseby and nearby Ranfurly and farm irrigation.

The 2025 race over 27-30 August shattered records, drawing an all-time high of 253 participants and setting seven new course records.
Jill Wolff, Race Organiser GNWR said: “Every year this eventgrows, but 2025 was something special - the energy, the record numbers, and theincredible community support made it unforgettable. The Naseby Forest offers aunique and challenging course that runners keep coming back for. We’re gratefulto Ernslaw One for continuing to support the race and for helping us createsuch an iconic ultra-marathon experience right here in Central Otago.”
Runners can choose from a variety of demanding distances - 50km, 60km (team), 80km, 100km, 100 miles,200km, and 200 miles - with the longest events open only to provenultra-marathoners.
