Sweeping up 20 years of curling fun in Naseby

This year, Ernslaw One proudly celebrated 20 years of involvement with the Maniototo Adventure Park in Naseby, with its much-loved annual curling tournament, a day filled with friendly (and at times fiercely competitive) fun on the ice! The event brought together curling enthusiasts from Ernslaw One and some of its key stakeholders, including Pacific Basin Shipping, Horizon Shipbrokers, Napier Port, Genera, IFS Growth, Qube, Union Forests, Dynes Transport, Mike Hurring Ltd, Ferguson Marine, Bluewood Logging, Mitchpine, Envirofume Ltd, FENZ and others for a memorable day of slides, sweeps, and plenty of laughs.

Held at the Maniototo Adventure Park, home to the Southern Hemisphere’s only dedicated indoor curling rink, the tournament has become a cornerstone event on the company calendar, growing in size, reputation, and significance over two decades.

But this much-anticipated tradition has even deeper roots.

The tournament began as a light-hearted challenge between Craigpine and Resource Management, the company that managed the forest after the NZ Forest Service in 1987 until Ernslaw One’s purchase in 2000. Craigpine operated a sawmill in Ranfurly until 1999, and even after its closure, the rivalry continued thanks to an ongoing trading relationship with Craigpine’s Winton sawmill.

Each year’s winner was engraved on the trophy, a tradition that continues to this day. Ernslaw One didn’t take home the silverware this year – that honour went to Dynes.

Ernslaw Vs Dynes/Qube

“We’re absolutely thrilled to bring home the trophythis year! The curling was serious fun, but the real win was getting to connect with so many people in such a unique and relaxed setting. We’ll be back nextyear,” said Owain Carter, Dynes Manager.

Darren Mann, Ernslaw One CEO says the event is more than just a fun day on the ice. “It’s a fantastic way to connect with our business partners and the wider community in an environment that is quite special.  We love seeing first-timers give curling a go. A few learn pretty quick and give some of seasoned pros a good run for their money”.

The tournament is also a reflection of Ernslaw One’s lasting ties to the Naseby community. Twenty years ago, the company was one of the original land donors that helped establish the Maniototo Adventure Park, making this milestone celebration not just about sport, but about a deep and enduring connection to the region.

And beyond the competition, it's always been about the people. The event provides a rare opportunity to see a different side of those we do business with, share stories over a stone or two, and build lasting relationships in a truly unique setting.
